Printable polymer optical temperature sensors

Project description
Optical sensors are, in contrast to their electrical counterparts, insensitive to electromagnetic interference, non-conductive and electrically passive. They are thus suited for environments that cause malfunctions in electrical sensors.
The current sub-project is a part of the Collaborative Research Centre ìPlanar Optronic Systemsî and concerns itself with a development of an optical temperature sensor for integration in flexible polymeric foil.
The system, based on a Fiber-Bragg-Grating, reflects a narrow band of wavelength by broadband excitation. Thermal expansion of the polymer results in a change of the grating period and thus in a shift of the resonant wavelength.
For stable operation of the sensor, various possibilities of optical coupling and compensation of interference factors are analyzed and implemented.
