Projects
Implantable sensor system for continuous monitoring of cardiovascular parameters

Project description
This project focusses on the development of a medical device which monitors cardiovascular parameters for mobile patients, with no restrictions on patient mobility. By means of implantable, but extravascular, micro-optical systems, the mechanical dynamics of the cardiovascular system are monitored with a spatial resolution in the micrometer range at frequencies of 100 kHz. The sensor consists of two spectrally matched VCSEL-photodiode pairs mounted on an ultra-thin polymer substrate and allows continuous long-term-monitoring of several vital parameters as pulse wave velocity, state of arteriosclerosis, blood oxygen saturation or ECG. The extremely small dimensions of the sensor make perivascular mounting possible without any impact on the blood vessel dynamics. Using telemetric data and power transmission, the sensor can be evaluated during long-term measurements on an ambulant organism.
