In the framework of the research project Optical Cochlear Implants (OCI, www.photonikforschung.de/foerderung/lebenswissenschaften/projekt/optical-ci.html), funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF), Grant No. 13N13728, with partners from industry (Inomed (Project coordination; Emmendingen, Germany) und MED-EL (Innsbruck, Austria)) and acadamia (Auditory Neuroscience and InnerEarLab, University Medical Center Göttingen (Göttingen, Deutschland)) microoptical tools are developed targeting the optogenetic stimulation of the cochlea. The innovative systems are based on thin-film micro-light-emitting diodes (µLED) integrated on a flexible, polymeric substrate. The linear arrays are comprised of up to 144 µLEDs with a typical footprint of 100×100 µm2.
