"Having studied classical physics at Karlsruhe University (today KIT) I changed to the newly founded Institute for Microstructure Technology of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. After three years, in 1992, I finished my PhD on microturbines and micromotors at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe.

I stayed at the Institute for Microstructure Technology and worked on microactuators and their application in medical technology. In 1999 I took over the group of micro optics where I focused on devices for optical communication technology and optical sensors. Having a call to the University of Freiburg I started my professorship for microactuators in October 2003 at the Department for Microsystems Engineering –IMTEK. Since then, my work concentrates on magnetic microsystems, on the one hand, and adaptive micro optics, on the other hand. In September 2010 I was offered a one year fellowship at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies –FRIAS.

My research is financed by 80% through third party funding, mainly by the German Research Foundation. I teach Microactuators in our Masters programme, Microsystem Devices on the Bachelors programme, and non-technical issues, like project management, as well."
