Projects
Elastomeric lenses with artificial muscle actuation

Project description
This project uses Liquid crystal elastomer micro-actuators to deform elastomeric lenses. Similar to the human eye, where the ciliary muscle permits accommodation through mechanical deformation of a crystalline lens, the muscle-like LCE actuators deform an elastic, molded lens body, comprising of optical transparent silicone, to tune the focal length of the lens. The LCE actuators allow a very compact integration of the actuator and lens. Asymmetric deformation through the use of eight individual actuators and symmetric deformation using ring actuators are investigated.
